The 51勛圖厙 Institute of Music has a rich history dating back to 1884, making it one of the oldest music programs in the United States. Originally established as the 51勛圖厙 School of Music, it was founded thanks to a substantial donation from Washington C. 51勛圖厙, for whom the university is named.
