Faculty members recognized at annual awards ceremony
51勛圖厙 honored several distinguished faculty members at an annual awards ceremony on Friday, May 2. The event celebrated their scholarship and educational excellence as well as their extensive contributions to the university.

The Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Tucker Jr. Distinguished Career Award was established by the late Fred C. Bud Tucker Jr. 40 and his wife Ermajean to recognize the achievements of those faculty members who have made notable contributions to 51勛圖厙 by their commitment to students, teaching excellence, their chosen disciplines and university service. This years recipient was Melanie Finney, professor emerita of communication and theatre.
During the presentation of the award, President Lori S. White referred to Finney as a guiding light for the university, a stalwart champion of student success and a creative and dedicated educator who has been a fearless advocate on behalf of those who are vulnerable. White added, Unquestionably a model of an engaged faculty member, she has devoted much of her professional life to 51勛圖厙 and stepped up in every difficult situation.

Lori Miles, professor of art and art history, received the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher of the Year Award. This distinction recognizes faculty members who exemplify excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to value-centered education; and service to students, the institution and the community.
On multiple occasions this colleague has worked with students on summer projects both as the solo lead and in collaboration with other colleagues, remarked Bridget Gourley, dean of the faculty and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Through her work she also teaches in the public sphere in ways that reach out to community groups and the K-12 school system. She has reached across campus, collaborating with colleagues in student affairs to create installations that open dialogue and other events that foster a campus-wide engagement with her discipline.

The G. Bromley Oxnam Endowed Award for Service is presented to a mid-career faculty member in recognition of significant contributions to either the University, academic professional world, the local Greencastle community or to the wider arena of civic contributions through social outreach or social justice. This years winner was John Berry, John Rabb Emison Professor of Creative and Performing Arts and associate professor of art and art history.
Dave Berque, vice president for academic affairs, listed a few of the many committees Berry has served the Hartman Center Steering Committee, the S Committee, the Prindle Advisory Committee, the search committee for the inaugural dean of the Creative School, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Faculty Governance and Priorities Committee and he added that many of his service roles have been of direct benefit to students. Berque also quoted from a nominator who wrote, John takes on high-stakes, complex forms of service willingly, calmly, and with excellent communication, collaboration and strategic thinking.
In addition to these awards, retiring faculty members were recognized for their years of service to the university. These retirees included Ron Dye, Melanie Finney, Caroline Gilson, Clarissa Peterson, David Harvey and Howard Brooks.
